AMD's FSR 4.1 Is Coming to Xbox Series X — Here's What That Means

AMD has confirmed FSR 4.1 upscaling is headed to Xbox Series X, plus older RDNA 2 GPUs and Z2-powered handhelds. Could it match PS5's new QSSR model?

Xbox Series X players, you're finally getting some upscaling love. AMD has officially announced that FSR 4.1 is expanding to more hardware, and for the first time, Xbox Series X is on the list. Until now, the tech was locked to Radeon 7000 and 9000 series graphics cards, so this is a pretty big deal for console folks.

If you're new to all this, FSR 4.1 works a lot like DLSS — it uses AI to take a low-resolution image and blow it back up to native resolution. The catch? It's more computationally expensive than FSR 3, which is exactly why AMD has been slow to roll it out to lower-power hardware. The new support list isn't just Xbox Series X, either. It also includes RDNA 2 cards like the 6800 XT and Z2-powered handhelds such as the Xbox Ally X20. Translation: if you're rocking older hardware, you might get next-gen upscaling without buying anything new.

AMD's senior vice president of gaming and graphics, Jack Huynh, explained that the team slimming down the model was key. They made it efficient enough to run on weaker hardware that lacks the AI accelerators found in RDNA 4. Previously, the running cost was so high that it canceled out the benefits of upscaling itself — which is why AMD held off on pushing the model down to older devices for so long.

The timing here is interesting. Just a few weeks ago, AMD and Sony did something similar with PSSR 2, rolling out a new optimized model called QSSR for the base PS5. IGN reckons FSR 4.1 could deliver a comparable experience on Xbox. So yeah, console upscaling is having a bit of a moment.

Don't expect the new model to drop on Xbox tomorrow, though. AMD is only saying it's "coming soon" — no specific date yet. The report mentions hoping Microsoft can squeeze it into a patch before GTA 6 launches next month. And even if that doesn't happen, Xbox will keep working with AMD on console upscaling. In the same video, Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet confirmed that AMD's next-gen FSR "Diamond" will land on Xbox's next-gen console, Project Helix.

So what do you think — are you hoping FSR 4.1 hits your Xbox before GTA 6, or are you more curious about what "Diamond" will bring to Project Helix? Let us know in the comments.
