Sony Patent: AI Could Make Boss Fights Adapt to You

A new Sony patent proposes using AI to alter boss fights in real time based on player behavior. Could this change how we experience games?

Sony Patent: AI Could Make Boss Fights Adapt to You

Ever wished a boss fight would learn your moves and hit back harder? Sony might be thinking about it. A newly published patent from the PlayStation maker proposes using AI to adapt boss battles on the fly, based on how you play. And if you're a Souls fan, that might sound like a dream—or a nightmare.

The patent, spotted by Patentlyze (via Wccftech), is titled "AI-adapted non-player character for video game system" and was first filed in the US last March. It was published on October 1. In it, Sony outlines a system that collects player data and trains a machine learning model to generate content that can be woven into games. The goal? More realistic NPCs and, potentially, bosses that react to your every move.

So what kind of data are we talking about? The patent mentions tracking your reaction time to enemy attacks, the timing of your actions (like attacks, dodges, blocks, or parries), and how often you succeed at those maneuvers. It also looks at boss interaction data—attack patterns, how often you avoid or counter them, changes to boss health, and even how you use the environment. All that info could feed into an AI that adjusts the fight in real time.

And it's not just about combat. The patent suggests NPCs could have emotional characteristics, with voices that shift in pitch, volume, and rhythm to convey urgency, calmness, fear, aggression, warmth, encouragement, or connection. Imagine a boss that sounds genuinely scared when you're winning—or one that taunts you with increasing confidence as you falter.

The AI could work before gameplay, in real time during gameplay, or after gameplay, according to the patent. So Sony is covering its bases: maybe bosses adapt on the fly, maybe they learn between sessions, or maybe it's all pre-generated. There's no guarantee any of this will make it into a game, but the possibilities are intriguing.

Of course, there's a flip side. For many players, especially in Souls-like games, learning a boss's patterns and mastering the fight is the whole point. That hard-won victory after countless deaths feels earned. If a boss could adapt to your every move, would you still feel that sense of progress? Or would it feel like fighting a top-level human opponent every time—exhilarating for some, exhausting for others?

We don't know if Sony will actually use this tech, or if FromSoftware is paying attention. But if they are, Hidetaka Miyazaki might just be smiling. After all, he's said FromSoftware doesn't make games for everyone: "The motivation is that this is a game I want to see exist." Would adaptive bosses make you want to see more, or would you rather keep your boss fights predictable? Let us know in the comments!
