Game Pass Could Get a Pick-Your-Own Overhaul, Report Says

Ever wish you could build your own Game Pass? You know, pick cloud gaming here, multiplayer there, and skip the stuff you never touch? Well, according to a new Fortune report, that's exactly where Xbox might be headed.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is reportedly plotting a "major overhaul" of Game Pass. The big idea? Let you choose features à la carte — things like cloud gaming, multiplayer, and "add-ons for console-only games." The service would also move to a "tiered structure," per the report. So instead of one big bundle, you'd potentially mix and match what you actually want.

This isn't totally out of the blue. Back in April, there were reports that Microsoft was prepping a "pick-your-own" version of Game Pass — which sounds a lot like what Fortune is describing now. And Sharma herself has said she wants to "evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system." She's also been blunt: Game Pass was a big bet that didn't pay off.

She's already made some bold moves. New Call of Duty releases are no longer dropping into the membership, and the price has come down. Her team is also going to start charging for more cloud-gaming time — a change plenty of folks are calling a downgrade that makes Game Pass worse and more expensive.

The Fortune story doesn't stop at Game Pass. It also claims Sharma is planning more layoffs at Xbox this month, in October, and again in January 2027 — cutting more than 3,000 jobs total as part of a bid to "reset" the business. There's also talk of a new Xbox handheld in 2027 and a new console in 2028, reportedly priced at up to $1,800. And in a wild twist, the report says several people at Xbox have seen internal presentations about the possibility of Xbox being sold or spun off.

That's a lot to unpack. A flexible, build-your-own Game Pass could be great if it saves you money on features you don't use — but it could also get confusing fast, especially with ads reportedly on the table in earlier rumors. Either way, it sounds like the Game Pass you know is about to change.

What do you think of a pick-your-own Game Pass? Would you build a cheaper plan, or do you prefer the all-in-one bundle? Let us know in the comments.
