Hasbro Taps Former Halo Boss to Lead Wizards of the Coast

Dan Ayoub, ex-343 Industries head, is now president of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, overseeing Magic: The Gathering, D&D, and upcoming games.

Ever wonder who's calling the shots at Wizards of the Coast? Well, wonder no more: Hasbro just named Dan Ayoub as the new president of Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games. That means he's now the big boss for Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and upcoming titles like Exodus and Warlock.

Ayoub isn't a stranger to big franchises. He's been in the games industry for 25 years, with stints at Ubisoft and EA, an 11-year run at Microsoft as studio head of Halo developer 343 Industries, and a VP/GM role at Certain Affinity. He joined Wizards in 2022 as senior vice president of digital games and Dungeons & Dragons, so he already knows the territory.

Hasbro didn't just pick a name out of a hat. The company says Ayoub was "selected after a rigorous search that evaluated dozens of internal and external candidates." CEO Chris Cocks praised him, saying, "He understands what our games mean to the people who play them and what it takes to build great teams and experiences."

Ayoub takes over from John Hight, who announced earlier this year that he was stepping down. In his new role, Ayoub will oversee two major games in production: the sci-fi RPG Exodus at Archetype Entertainment and the third-person action game Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons at Invoke Studios. Both are highly anticipated, and now they're under his watch.

In a statement, Ayoub said he's "honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games" and grateful to Cocks and the leadership team. He added that "Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember," and pledged to "put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital."

Of course, this news comes just weeks after the D&D and Magic: The Gathering developers unionized, claiming that Wizards is pushing "adoption of LLMs and generative AI." The company didn't voluntarily recognize the union by the October 13th deadline. So Ayoub steps in at a pretty interesting time.

With his background in big-budget games and his recent experience at Wizards, Ayoub seems well-positioned to steer the ship. But will he be able to balance fan expectations, union concerns, and the growth of both tabletop and digital? Only time will tell. What do you think of the new appointment? Will you be picking up Exodus or Warlock when they launch?
