Fable Survives 10 Years of Dev Hell Because Xbox Calls It 'Vital'

Fable's director says the reboot lasted a decade of development because Xbox sees the franchise as vital, and the game is finally set to launch in early 2027.

Ever wonder how a game can stay in development for a whole decade without getting the axe? That's exactly the story behind the new Fable, which has somehow survived 10 years of stop-start development at Xbox.

According to the game's director, the reason is simple: Xbox views Fable as "vital." That word alone explains a lot. Plenty of promising Xbox projects never made it that far. Everwild and Perfect Dark were both canned by Microsoft despite clearly having potential, so Fable could easily have joined them on the scrap heap.

Instead, it's still standing. The contract for the game was first signed back in 2017, which means this thing has been quietly ticking along for the better part of a decade. That's a long time in game development terms — long enough for entire console generations to come and go.

Fable was officially announced in 2020, and since then fans have been waiting (and waiting) for a proper look at what Playground Games is cooking up. The good news? It's finally almost ready. The game is set to launch at the start of 2027.

Think about that timeline for a second. From contract signing in 2017 to launch in early 2027 is a full decade of work. During that stretch, Xbox has shipped plenty of great games on Series X, Series S and other platforms, but it's also quietly killed off projects that just couldn't get over the line. Fable dodged that fate.

Being labeled "vital" by Xbox clearly carries weight. It suggests the company sees the Fable brand as something worth protecting — a franchise with enough history and fan goodwill that pulling the plug simply wasn't an option, even when development dragged on.

For players, the takeaway is straightforward: the wait is nearly over, and the game survived long enough to actually come out. After years of rumors, delays and radio silence, Fable is real and it has a release window.

So, does a decade of development make you more excited or more nervous about the final product? Will you be picking Fable up when it launches in early 2027?
