GTA 6's $400 Collector's Set Sparks Fan Outrage

What would you pay for a collector's edition that doesn't even include the game? Rockstar just found out the hard way that $400 might be pushing it.

The studio announced a $400 collector's set for GTA 6, packed with premium merch but missing one crucial item: an actual copy of the game. Fans aren't happy, and they're making their feelings known online. Many argue the set doesn't offer enough value to justify the hefty price tag.

So what's inside that's driving the cost up? A pair of Oakley sunglasses. Since Oakley shades typically run $150–$200, a custom pair likely pushed the price even higher. This makes it the most expensive Rockstar collector's edition ever, and even diehard fans are balking. "I hate to say it, but I think I'm gonna pass on the collector's edition," one fan said. "$400 is just insane and it doesn't even come with a steelbook copy of the game. I'd rather save my money and buy some individual merch items that look cool rather than some overpriced sunglasses."

Others are pointing to the past. Red Dead Redemption 2 had a similar collector's box without the game for just $100, filled with trinkets and in-game item replicas like a physical store catalog. Many feel Rockstar nailed that one. "I would've actually preferred a GTA 6 Collector's Box similar to the one for Red Dead Redemption 2," another fan said. "It felt more connected to the game and the price point of around 100 bucks was also WAY MORE reasonable." RDR2 also had smaller special editions at $79.99 and $99.99, with the latter including a steelbook and online content.

GTA 5 followed a similar pattern: a $79.99 special edition with a steelbook, blueprint map, digital content, and the game itself, plus a $150 version with extra physical goodies like a New Era snapback and a security deposit bag. One fan lamented the shift: "If this was 2016, they'd have an Ultimate Edition for $129.99 that includes the game, the coke mirror, the snuff spoon, the razor keychain and a map, but we live in 2026 SuperHell."

Meanwhile, GTA 6's $100 Ultimate Edition offers plenty of digital content but no steelbook, disc, or physical extras. The $400 set does include a physical version of Leonida's map, but that's another sore spot—historically, Rockstar bundled a poster or map with standard copies. It's unclear if the standard boxed version will include one, and IGN has reached out to Rockstar for clarification. "I remember this used to come with the normal physical copy of the game," one worried fan noted.

Despite the backlash, GTA 6 will get a physical edition with a code in the box (no disc), releasing November 12, a week before launch so players can pre-load. Rockstar is also selling a physical CD and vinyl of the game's album, plus limited edition DualSense controllers for superfans.
