A fresh round of PS6 performance math is making the rounds, and it's got people talking. The short version: one estimate says Sony's next console could theoretically push 68 to 80 TFLOPS of FP32 compute, while Nvidia's RTX 5080 sits at around 56.3 TFLOPS. Yeah, you read that right — on paper, the console looks like it outmuscles a desktop flagship.
The numbers come from GameGPU, which ran the calculations based on previously leaked specs for the PS6's semi-custom "Orion" SoC. TweakTown picked up the analysis and discussed it, but was quick to point out that the whole "80 TFLOPS" figure doesn't really hold up.
So what's supposedly inside this thing? The leak points to a GPU with 54 RDNA 5 compute units, with two disabled and 52 active, clocked up to 3.6GHz. That's paired with 160-bit GDDR7 memory running at up to 32Gbps, and the entire Orion APU is capped at a 160W TDP. Its raw raster performance lands somewhere around 34 to 40 TFLOPS — roughly in the same ballpark as AMD's RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. For comparison, the RX 9070 XT packs 64 CUs, 256-bit memory, and draws around 304W.
The jump from a nominal 40 TFLOPS to 68-80 TFLOPS comes down to RDNA 5's full dual-issue VALU pipeline. In theory, it can dispatch vector operations to two ALU lanes in a single clock cycle, and new FMA instructions would push FP32 utilization way up. But here's the catch: dual-issue has existed since RDNA 3, and game engine compilers have historically struggled to actually take advantage of it. Whether it works this time depends heavily on driver and engine support.
Most analysts seem to agree on one thing — under that dual-issue assumption, beating the RTX 5080 in theoretical compute might be possible. But claiming the PS6 will beat an RTX 5080 in real-world gaming performance? That's a conclusion nobody can honestly draw right now.
Leaker Moore's Law is Dead has previously claimed the PS6 will offer roughly three times the raster performance of the PS5 and six to twelve times the ray tracing. Even so, under heavy pure-raster workloads, the RX 9070 XT could still come out around 5 to 10 percent ahead. And remember — all of this is built on leaks and theoretical estimates. Sony has never officially confirmed the name "PSSR3," and none of these specs have been announced.
