Did you ever get stuck in Mafia 3 and wonder if it was just you? Turns out it wasn't — and ten years later, Hangar 13 has finally done something about it.
Mafia 3: Definitive Edition just received a brand-new Steam update, and the studio framed it as a birthday gift. "We're honouring a decade of Lincoln's legacy with a new Steam update bringing quality-of-life enhancements to Mafia 3: Definitive Edition, live now," Hangar 13 said. Yes, the game is officially ten years old. Feel old yet?
Don't expect a massive overhaul here. If you bounced off Lincoln Clay's stylish, impeccably soundtracked crusade against '60s mafioso racists back in the day, this patch probably won't drag you back in. But if you're still playing — or have been meaning to — the changes are genuinely welcome.
The headliners are less janky mission progress, better NPC behaviour, and improved achievement tracking. That last one speaks for itself. For mission progress, Hangar 13 says it addressed several spots where players reported getting stuck and unable to make progress, specifically calling out missions like "Get Enzo Conti," "Kill Tommy Marcano," and the Epilogue. Mid-mission crashes got some attention too.
NPC fixes should mean characters like Alcee, Father James, and others no longer freak out mid-mission — which is less charming, sure, but definitely better for actually finishing the game. There are a bunch of other changes in the patch as well.
It's worth remembering that Mafia 3 has always been a divisive one. PC Gamer scored it 54%, a number that still baffles some of us. The game had its repetitive stretches, and its technical rough edges were real. But there's a lot to love in its atmosphere, its music, and its bold storytelling.
A decade on, seeing it still get love from its developers is a nice thing. It's not a remaster, not a sequel, just a quiet bit of care for a game that deserved a little more of it.
Will you be jumping back into New Bordeaux for another run? What do you think of the update?
