Beyond Good & Evil 2 Still Alive, Writer Confirms

Remember Beyond Good & Evil 2? The game that was announced when you were probably still in school? Well, surprise—it's still kicking. Ubisoft Bordeaux's lead writer and associate narrative director, Rik Godwin, took to Bluesky on September 22 to share a tiny but mighty update: he's been working on the game in a support/consultant role for the past few months. "I am allowed to say this, I checked," he joked. So yeah, it's officially not dead yet.

Now, before you get too excited, this isn't a release date or a gameplay reveal. It's just a confirmation that someone new is helping out. Godwin, who previously wrote on Assassin's Creed Shadows, is lending his talents to the project. And it makes sense that Ubisoft Bordeaux is involved—according to IGN, Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio leading development, is just south of Bordeaux. Bordeaux typically supports other Ubisoft teams, though they did lead Assassin's Creed Mirage and the Claws of Awaji expansion for Shadows.

The timeline here is wild. Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first announced way back in May 2008, then re-revealed at E3 2017. That's nearly 20 years since the initial announcement and almost a decade since we last saw it properly. Ubisoft has dropped a few hints that development was ongoing in November 2025 and January 2026, but progress has been slow at best and invisible at worst. At this point, it's become the Duke Nukem Forever of our generation.

Still, Ubisoft keeps swearing the game will release "in due time." But let's be real—don't expect it anytime soon. At this rate, it might not even make it to the current console generation. The fact that it's still in development is a small miracle, but it's also a reminder of just how long this saga has dragged on.

For fans who've been waiting since the original Beyond Good & Evil in 2003, this is a bittersweet update. On one hand, it's alive. On the other, it's been alive for nearly two decades without a release. Godwin's role is a support one, so it's not like he's steering the ship, but any sign of life is better than silence.

So what does this mean for you? If you're a longtime fan, you've probably learned to temper your expectations. If you're new to the hype, welcome to the rollercoaster. Either way, the game isn't canceled, and that's something. Ubisoft has a lot to prove, and Beyond Good & Evil 2 has a lot to live up to—if it ever comes out.

Will you be picking this up if it ever launches? Or have you given up hope? Let us know in the comments.
