Well, this one's getting spicy. Hideo Kojima just broke his silence on why his next big action-espionage game, PHYSINT, jumped ship from PlayStation to Xbox — and the internet is absolutely not okay.
Here's the deal. Kojima posted on social media that back in mid-June, Kojima Productions suddenly got word from Sony Interactive Entertainment that PHYSINT was being canceled. No slow fade, no long goodbye — just a notice. Since the project means everything to the studio, the team spent the past three months hunting for a new partner, and eventually landed with Xbox, which apparently shares the same vision. The game is still in development, so don't panic — it's alive and kicking.
But the way Kojima told it — flatly stating Sony pulled the plug unilaterally — landed like a grenade in the player community. And here's where it gets messy: Kojima didn't thank Sony for its past funding or engine support. Not a word. Cue the backlash.
"You've taken so much money from SIE, they even lent you their engine for free, they looked after you for ages, and you can't even say thanks?" one player fired off. Another went full drama mode: "You think you were seeing an equal partnership? What you saw was a master — and now you're just angry that the servant is leaving."
Ouch. Others took a more measured but still critical angle. "I love Kojima, but yeah, he does burn through cash. I felt that way back in his Konami days too. If this was a business success, there's no way they'd cancel it." Someone else chimed in with the classic internet philosophy: "Times like this really reveal a person's character..." And perhaps the most telling line of all: "This is definitely not an amicable breakup."
To be fair, we don't know the full story behind Sony's decision. Was it budget? Strategy? Internal shifts? Kojima didn't say, and Sony hasn't exactly rushed to explain. But the optics are rough — a legendary creator publicly airing a canceled project, and a fanbase split between "he owes Sony respect" and "Sony did him dirty."
What's your take? Did Kojima burn a bridge, or is he just being honest about a tough situation? Sound off — we're listening.
