Wolverine's Sales Are Solid, But Not Spider-Man Big

Did you pick up Marvel's Wolverine when it launched on September 15? If so, you're part of what one analyst says is a pretty healthy early sales story.

Sony still hasn't dropped an official sales figure for the game, so we're working with analyst estimates here. According to that early data, Wolverine has sold around 1.9 million copies since launch, bringing in roughly $130 million in revenue.

That's a solid opening by most standards. Selling nearly two million copies in the early going puts the game in respectable territory, and $130 million is nothing to sneeze at. If you've been enjoying it, you're clearly not alone.

The catch? Don't expect this one to post Spider-Man numbers. That comparison has been floating around since the game was announced, and the early data suggests Wolverine is running in a different lane entirely. Spider-Man is a franchise that operates on a whole other level commercially, and matching it was always going to be a tall order.

It's worth keeping in mind that none of this is official. Sony hasn't announced a sales figure for Marvel's Wolverine, so everything we have right now comes from that single analyst's read on the early data. Treat the 1.9 million and $130 million as estimates until the publisher says otherwise.

Still, if those numbers hold up, it sounds like Wolverine has found a real audience. Not every game needs to be a record-shattering blockbuster to be a success, and a strong start like this gives the character plenty of room to grow.

What do you think — are you surprised by these early numbers, or did you expect Wolverine to go bigger? And if you've already played it, how are you finding it so far?
