Remember when Squadron 42 was supposed to launch in 2026? Yeah, about that. Chris Roberts said back in August that Star Citizen's singleplayer campaign was being pushed out of 2026 to avoid clashing with Grand Theft Auto 6, and plenty of folks raised an eyebrow at that explanation. But now there's something a lot more tangible to talk about: Squadron 42 has an actual Steam page.
That's right, you can now wishlist it, stare at its system requirements, and dream about what could be. And those requirements are surprisingly refreshing. There's no mention of ray tracing-capable GPUs or DirectX 12, which feels almost old-school in the best way. It's the kind of spec sheet that won't make you feel like you need to remortgage your house just to boot the game. That said, the 150GB install size is still pretty hefty, especially when you consider that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is apparently clocking in at 200GB. Oof indeed.
There's also a new trailer, and if you're into the whole oorah military sci-fi vibe, you'll probably eat it up. For everyone else, it leans pretty hard into the Top Gun-style bombast that's always been a bit of a turn-off. Privateer remains the gold standard for many Wing Commander fans precisely because it skipped all that nonsense, but Squadron 42 is putting it front and center. Expect plenty of saluting, dramatic speeches, and ships flying in formation.
Of course, no Squadron 42 update would be complete without mentioning the celebrity cast. Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Rhona Mitra, and the guy who played the Onion Knight in Game of Thrones all show up, along with other familiar faces who probably filmed their scenes a solid decade ago at this point. The trailer also gives us a good look at the male version of the player-character, who will undoubtedly BroShep his way into most of the promotional material. If you're like me, though, you'll be picking the female version voiced by Alix Wilton Regan instead.
The Steam page lists Squadron 42's release date as Q2 2027. Will it actually hit that window? Given the game's history, it's fair to be skeptical. These games have had so many release dates that the changes have their own wiki page. But there's a part of me that wants to believe. The promise of a solid combo of Wing Commander and Half-Life 2, complete with Gillian Anderson and Henry Cavill in the cutscenes, is a tantalizing one. It could happen. Stranger things have happened, right?
For now, at least we have something concrete to point to. A Steam page with system requirements and everything is a step forward, even if it's a small one. It means the game is real, it's coming, and you can officially add it to your wishlist. Whether it actually launches in Q2 2027 is another question entirely, but at least we have a date to circle on the calendar.
What do you think? Will you be wishlisting Squadron 42 on Steam, or are you waiting for a more concrete release date before getting excited?
