Ever wondered if Beyond Good & Evil 2 would ever see the light of day? Well, guess what: it's still alive, and it just got a new writer on board.
That's right, after 18 years since its initial announcement and a decade since its E3 2016 re-reveal, Ubisoft is still grinding away on this sci-fi fantasy sequel. There's still no release date in sight, but work is definitely happening. Just this week, Rik Godwin, lead writer and associate narrative director at Ubisoft Bordeaux, confirmed on social media that he joined the project a few months ago in a support and consultant role.
Ubisoft Bordeaux, founded in 2017, usually helps out other studios, but they've also led projects like Assassin's Creed Mirage and the recent Claws of Awaji expansion for Assassin's Creed Shadows. So having them assist on Beyond Good & Evil 2, which is led by Ubisoft Montpellier, makes perfect sense geographically—both studios are in southern France.
This is another intriguing development for a game that's been notoriously slow to progress. But there have been signs of life: the sequel got a new creative director, Fawzi Mesmar, to steady the ship, and the characters even made cameos in the Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition. That felt like a statement that the project now has a firm direction.
Plus, it survived Ubisoft's big reshuffle earlier this year, which saw other games like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake get cancelled. Mesmar said at the time, "Needless to say, I am saddened by the cancellations that has affected my colleagues in other parts of Ubisoft and the industry. I urge everyone — myself included — to offer support whenever and however they can during these times. We remain committed and focused on delivering a remarkable game for our players to enjoy."
So, inexplicably, Beyond Good & Evil 2 might actually come out one day. We don't know exactly how it'll look or if Ubisoft will even keep the name, but here's hoping we get answers sooner rather than later.
