Kojima: Physint Could Be My Biggest-Selling Game Ever

Did you hear the one about Hideo Kojima's spy game jumping ship from Sony to Xbox? In the aftermath of that shocker, Kojima himself is talking up Physint's commercial potential, and he's not holding back.

"This is the biggest selling title I could possibly create," Kojima told The Washington Post. That's a bold claim from the man behind Metal Gear, but he's serious. He also admitted he never saw the cancellation coming, telling reporters, "I didn't think Physint would be on the list of being canceled."

So what happened? According to veteran reporter Jason Schreier, Sony walked away after Kojima Productions reportedly went over budget and missed deadlines. Kojima Productions responded by saying people should be skeptical of what they read on the internet, though they didn't actually deny the report's details. Make of that what you will.

In an interview with IGN, Kojima clarified that Physint is still in the concept phase. He's figuring out the game's systems, visuals, and design, with a "very small team" currently on the project. The tagline? "The next cold war begins." Sounds appropriately tense.

Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, Kojima remains confident in the game's appeal. "Anything espionage is going to be fun, period, no matter what game it is," he said. He also revealed that the idea for Physint came partly from the overwhelming fan demand for another Metal Gear game. Since he no longer works at Konami and can't make a new Metal Gear, that interest inspired him to create a "new action espionage game"—which became Physint.

The game stars Bill Skarsgard, Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Meanwhile, Kojima Productions is also working on the horror game OD in partnership with Xbox. So the studio has its hands full.
