Remember when Silent Hill was stuck in a Konami cupboard for about a decade? Yeah, those days are over. The series is back with a vengeance, and it sounds like Konami isn't hitting the brakes anytime soon.
In a recent interview with Famitsu (via IGN), Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto revealed that the three games released so far—Silent Hill 2 Remake, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall—are only the "first wave" of the revival. And there are two more waves on the way. "Successfully launching this 'first wave' comes with great relief, but we're not stopping here; we must think of the second and third waves," Okamoto said. "We can't share specific details, but we're currently looking at a number of projects."
That's a pretty big deal, especially considering how rocky the road has been. Okamoto admitted that convincing Konami's executives to greenlight new Silent Hill games was tough, particularly after Hideo Kojima's Silent Hills was cancelled in 2015. Even when he got the Silent Hill 2 remake approved, he felt one remake wasn't enough. "If there were only one release, wouldn't people think that the development is going to be cancelled again?" he reasoned. So he pushed for more, and clearly, it paid off.
The three games we've gotten so far have all been well-received. Okamoto said Konami is "relieved" by both the critical and commercial response, adding that "they've also received high praise, and we are satisfied with it." That satisfaction is fueling the next phases of the plan.
We already know one project that's part of the future: Bloober Team, who did the excellent Silent Hill 2 remake, is now working on a remake of the 1999 original. That's a fascinating challenge, since the first game's story is much simpler than its legendary sequel. Will Bloober nail it again? We'll have to wait and see.
As for the other developers—NeoBards Entertainment (Silent Hill f) and Screen Burn Interactive (Silent Hill: Townfall)—it's not confirmed whether they'll return for more. But our own Silent Hill expert Elie Gould certainly thinks they have the chops. In her Silent Hill f review, she called it a "true return to form," and she praised Screen Burn for understanding "what makes a great Silent Hill game" in Townfall.
So, what does this mean for you? More foggy towns, more psychological horror, and more reasons to keep your PS5 warm. Konami is clearly committed to keeping Silent Hill alive, and if the first wave is any indication, the next ones could be even better.
Are you excited for more Silent Hill? What do you hope to see in the second and third waves? Let us know in the comments!
