Mass Effect TV Show Still Happening Despite BioWare Closure

Amazon's Mass Effect series is still in development at Prime Video, with key creatives on board, even after BioWare's shutdown and a canceled game.

Mass Effect TV Show Still Happening Despite BioWare Closure

Did you hear the news about BioWare shutting down? It's a tough blow for Mass Effect fans, but here's a silver lining: the Amazon TV show is still moving forward. According to IGN, the Prime Video series remains in active development, and the creative team is still attached. So even though the game studio is gone, the galaxy far, far away isn't going dark just yet.

For those worried about the show's fate, rest easy. Star Trek Beyond writer Doug Jung is still on board as showrunner, and Fast 9's Daniel Casey is penning the script. That's a solid duo, right? And remember, the story is set after Commander Shepard's trilogy, so we're getting something fresh in the Mass Effect universe.

Earlier this year, there were whispers that the show was being tweaked to appeal to non-gamers as well as die-hard fans. That makes sense—Amazon wants to cast a wide net. But don't worry, the core of Mass Effect should still shine through. After all, the franchise has a rich lore that's perfect for TV.

During last year's N7 Day, BioWare gave us a peek at their plans for the Amazon MGM series. They said the writers' room was going strong and they had a lot figured out about how it fits within the canon and where it sits relative to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story set after the original trilogy—not a retread of Shepard's journey. As they put it, "that's YOUR story, isn't it?"

This update comes after EA shuttered BioWare and canceled a new Mass Effect title, just months after the company was acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. In their goodbye message, BioWare said, "There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition." It's a sad moment for the studio, but at least the TV show keeps the spirit alive.

So, what does this mean for you? If you're a Mass Effect fan, the TV series could be a way to revisit the universe in a new format. And with the creative team intact, there's hope it'll capture the magic of the games. We'll be keeping an eye on this one.

What do you think? Are you excited for the Mass Effect TV show, or does the BioWare closure dampen your enthusiasm? Let us know in the comments!
