New PS5 Firmware Update Drops as Jailbreak Race Heats Up Before GTA 6

Sony rolls out PS5 firmware 26.07-14.20.00 (1.2GB) amid a cat-and-mouse jailbreak battle, with eyes on GTA 6's security.

New PS5 Firmware Update Drops as Jailbreak Race Heats Up Before GTA 6

Ever wonder what Sony's really up to when it drops a 'minor' firmware update? The company just pushed PS5 system software 26.07-14.20.00, a 1.2GB download that officially only 'improves the messages and usability on some screens.' But with the homebrew scene breathing down its neck, some think there's more going on under the hood.

Let's rewind. Late last month, a jailbreak supporting all PS5 consoles on firmware 7.00 through 13.60 sent shockwaves through the community. That meant any PS5—including the PS5 Pro—that hadn't been updated in the previous week could be modified. For Sony, that's a big deal: jailbroken consoles can potentially open the door to piracy.

But the homebrew crew didn't have it all their way. Some PS5 games started requiring the latest 14.00 firmware to download updates, which kicked off a renewed race to crack the newer software. So here we are in a classic game of Whac-A-Mole: the scene works on a jailbreak for the latest firmware, Sony releases a new update to beef up security, and the cycle repeats.

Notably, today's patch notes don't mention security at all. That silence has sparked concern about what happens if a jailbreak lands for the firmware required by GTA 6, which arrives in less than a month. If that happens, Rockstar's blockbuster could theoretically be pirated on PS5—and maybe even leak to PC.

One prominent homebrew member recently showed evidence of a jailbreak for firmware 14.10, though follow-up comments suggest dumping game executables isn't possible. There's no proof today's 14.20 update is a direct response to that, but some believe GTA 6 will need at least 14.20 to run now that it's out in the wild. Sony may even squeeze in another security update before November 19.

The bigger question: can Sony win this Whac-A-Mole? It's something of an existential crisis for the platform holder, since publishers and developers rely on PlayStation's security. And with powerful AI models entering the mix, the stakes have never been higher. Will you be updating your PS5 right away, or holding off?
