Ever felt the pressure of a ticking clock in an RPG? The Blood of Dawnwalker, the new vampire RPG from The Witcher 3 veterans at Rebel Wolves, has a strict 30-day and 30-night schedule to resolve the main story. Everything you do costs time, and that's sparked some serious FOMO among fans. But Baldur's Gate 3 publishing director Michael "Cromwelp" Douse isn't among the critics.
In a recent post on X, Douse revealed he's "horribly close to the end of Dawnwalker," a game that reminds him of playing Legacy of Kain for the first time. He praised its gothic vibes and brilliant antagonists, calling it "such a great ride." Then he addressed the elephant in the room: the time mechanic. "I'm surprised there's any backlash to the 'time mechanic,'" he wrote. "It's a perfectly interwoven narrative tool that cleverly disguises the fact that you need not play the game like The Witcher."
Douse's take comes after the first and biggest mod for The Blood of Dawnwalker reworked the time restriction entirely, proving it's not universally loved. Even the developers admitted they "rebalanced" it before launch and said future sequels might scrap or change it. But Douse sees it as a strength, not a flaw.
He also has big hopes for the series. "In a sequel I'd love to see Rebel Wolves double down on the gothic overtones," he said, praising the world where humans and vampires coexist alongside low fantasy social conflict. While he doubts the series will always stick to a 30-day formula, he believes there are many ways for Dawnwalker to grow into its own massive, brilliant thing. "I'm so behind these guys," he added.
For players, the time limit might sound scary on paper, but according to those who've played it, it's all about balance. You can still explore and do side quests, but every action has a cost. It's a design choice that forces you to prioritize, adding tension and replayability. And if you're still on the fence, the game's gothic atmosphere and strong antagonists are winning people over.
So, is the time mechanic a dealbreaker or a clever twist? Douse clearly thinks it's the latter, and he's not alone. With the game already out, you can judge for yourself. Will you be picking up The Blood of Dawnwalker, or does the ticking clock turn you off? Let us know in the comments!
