State of Decay 3 Announced Early Due to Xbox Acquisition Fears

Undead Labs' boss reveals State of Decay 3 was revealed early out of fear the studio could be swallowed up by Xbox's acquisition spree. The game is still in active development.

State of Decay 3 Announced Early Due to Xbox Acquisition Fears

Ever wonder why State of Decay 3 was announced way back in 2020, when it's still not out? Turns out, it wasn't just about building hype—it was about survival.

According to former Undead Labs boss Jeff Holt, the studio pushed to reveal the game early because they were worried about being "swallowed up or divested" before they could show the world what they were working on. In an interview with The Game Business, Holt explained that Microsoft's acquisition spree had him anxious. "I didn't think Microsoft was done being acquisitive," he said. "I figured they'd start buying big things." And he was right—Xbox announced its intention to buy Activision Blizzard in 2022.

So, back in 2020, during an Xbox showcase, we got that cinematic trailer for State of Decay 3. It was meant to be a mission statement, but Holt admits it didn't really reflect what the team had—because they had very little. "I got myself in a little trouble saying we didn't really have a team working on the game at that point," he said. "It's not entirely true, but we had a really small team." Development didn't truly ramp up until 2023.

Still, that early announcement served its purpose. "It was a bit of a marker on the table for me," Holt said. "We're saying State of Decay 3, we're announcing it, it's public, the audience now knows it's in development." It was a way to stake a claim and ensure the project wouldn't quietly disappear.

Since then, a lot has changed. Undead Labs went independent last month, and the studio has suffered significant layoffs. State of Decay 3 remains in active development, though, and it's still set to launch day one on Game Pass. Holt also revealed that State of Decay 2's post-launch updates became a testing ground for ideas that directly informed State of Decay 3's design.

The road hasn't been easy. The layoffs came after the studio split from Microsoft, and other Xbox studios like Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games are also charting new paths. Meanwhile, Halo Studios also faced layoffs, and the Halo franchise has been handed to Activision for its next game.

So, what does this mean for you? State of Decay 3 is still coming, but it's been a rocky journey. The early reveal was less about marketing and more about survival in a shifting industry. Will the final game live up to that 2020 promise? We'll have to wait and see.
