Ubisoft Sold a Game But Forgot to Include the Actual Game

Ever bought a game, downloaded it, and found out you got... absolutely nothing? That's exactly what happened to players who snagged Ubisoft's recent re-release of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 on Steam. The publisher literally forgot to include the game files. Yep, you read that right.

The original Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is an all-time classic, and this re-release bundled the base game with its two expansions for just $10. It should've been an easy win, especially with a full remake coming next year. But when players forked over their cash and hit install, they noticed something odd: the "game" was only 23.49KB in size. That's not a game; that's a text file with delusions of grandeur.

Players quickly discovered that Ubisoft had shipped a dummy executable instead of the actual game. One brave soul tried to launch it and got a command prompt window saying, "Dummy executable ensure that you are on the right Steam branch." So, you paid for a game, and you got a command prompt. Fun times.

Steam reviews erupted with sarcasm and disbelief. One user called it the "Best CMD prompt simulator of 2026. 10/10." Another chimed in with a bitter "You will own nothing and be happy," while someone else asked the million-dollar question: "Dude, where's my game?" The internet, as always, delivered.

Ubisoft did eventually fix the issue, but according to one user review, the fix took nearly 11 hours after launch. That's 11 hours of staring at a dummy executable. Most of the negative reviews on the Steam page are now about this mess, and understandably so. Some players are even pointing others to grab Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete on GOG instead, where it's currently on sale for $5. Ouch.

Ubisoft hasn't commented on the mix-up yet, but they'll have a chance to redeem themselves with the full Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake next year. That remake promises 4K visuals, the original campaign, and both expansions woven into one unified story with a new prologue, epilogue, and cinematic scenes. Sounds awesome, right? Let's just hope they remember to include the actual game this time.
