Ever wondered what Rapture would look like on the big screen? You're not alone. Director Francis Lawrence is right there with you, and he's given fans a glimmer of hope that the BioShock movie might actually happen.
In a recent chat with The Direct, Lawrence confirmed he's "definitely active" on the project and that they're "still working on it." But he didn't sugarcoat the challenge. "It is a tough nut to crack that world and that story," he admitted. The core issue? In the game, you are the character, so creating a protagonist from scratch for a world that Lawrence himself calls "pretty batshit in a most amazing way" is no small feat. Still, he added, "we're getting there, and we're getting close, which is great."
For the uninitiated, BioShock drops players into an underwater art-deco utopia gone horribly wrong. Bringing that unique vision to life would be a dream come true for fans who've been clamoring to see Rapture in live action. And Lawrence is clearly passionate: "I would love nothing more than to be able to make that movie," he said.
But there's a catch—and it's a big one. Netflix is currently going through some serious leadership shake-ups. The streamer recently fired head of film Dan Lin and chief content officer Bela Bajaria, and Lawrence admits that "the Netflix of it all" could be a roadblock. "Netflix right now has had regime changes and just all of that kind of nonsense that I don't like to have to deal with," he explained. "So we'll see. Hopefully we'll figure it out."
The BioShock movie was first announced back in 2022, and since then updates have been few and far between. Last year, producer Roy Lee revealed the film would be based on the 2007 game. Earlier this year, he said Netflix and publisher Take-Two were "very anxious" to release the movie alongside "potential new incarnations of the game." Lawrence also told GamesRadar+ this month that he was "dying" to make the film, which has since been retooled with a smaller budget.
So, what do you think? Will the BioShock movie ever see the light of day, or is Rapture doomed to stay underwater? Let us know in the comments!
