Remember the nightmare fuel that was Assassin's Creed Unity's launch? Floating eyeballs, disembodied hair—it was a mess. Well, The Witcher 3 Remastered just dropped, and it seems like history is repeating itself in the weirdest way possible.
The remaster launched on September 29, and for the most part, it's been a treat. You've got tons of new settings to tweak, and the enhanced visuals give old fans a reason to return and new ones a perfect excuse to finally experience Geralt's epic journey. But amidst the praise, a creeping horror has emerged—literally.
Players are reporting a bizarre bug where NPCs' faces fail to load properly. Instead of a friendly innkeeper or a merchant, you're greeted by a floating set of eyes and teeth, like some cursed abomination from the Continent. It's equal parts terrifying and hilarious, and it's happening to multiple people.
Reddit is already buzzing with posts about this. One user shared images of a character at an inn, then a merchant on the street, both suffering from the same glitch. "This is not the first character I found having this issue," they wrote, noting that the NPC's body eventually restored after leaving and returning. Others chimed in with their own encounters, some comparing it directly to Assassin's Creed Unity's infamous face bugs.
What's interesting is that these reports come from various playtimes, with one player encountering it after 15 hours. For an RPG as massive as The Witcher 3, going that long without a noticeable bug is actually pretty impressive. But when they do hit, they hit hard—and weird.
Some fans are even hoping CD Projekt Red leaves this bug in, much like the low-poly pigeon that became a meme. After all, a little creepiness now and then keeps things exciting, right? Plus, it's hard not to laugh when a quest giver suddenly looks like a floating pair of dentures.
Of course, the remaster has been a huge success otherwise. It hit a new Steam player peak of nearly 140,000, and CD Projekt Red celebrated the 11-year-old RPG's resurgence with a heartfelt "Much love" to fans. So while the bug is unfortunate, it hasn't stopped people from diving back in.
