Hold onto your controllers, because a fresh leak just dropped some juicy details about Sony's next handheld. According to gamegpu, the device—internally called "PSP 3 Handheld" and codenamed "Project Canis"—is reportedly being developed alongside the PS6, which is expected to launch in 2027. And the screen specs? They sound like a serious upgrade.
First up, the display. Word is the PSP 3 will sport a bezel-less, full-screen design with an OLED panel. That means deeper blacks, higher contrast, and faster response times—everything you'd want from a premium portable. But it gets better: the leak suggests it might use a next-gen OLED panel, possibly even a dual-layer Tandem OLED architecture. In HDR mode, peak brightness could hit 1000 nits, while SDR sits around 600 nits. It's also said to cover the full DCI-P3 color gamut.
Battery life is always a concern for handhelds, and this screen might help. The new panel is rumored to cut power consumption by about 25% compared to the previous generation. That's a big deal for a portable device—more gaming, less charging.
On the spec sheet, the PSP 3's screen is said to have a native 1080p resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, with support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). That should make for buttery-smooth visuals, especially in fast-paced games.
But what if the hardware can't quite keep up? That's where Sony's rumored PSSR 3.0 upscaling tech comes in. The leak claims it'll use neural network-based frame generation, boosting a base render of 30–60 FPS up to 60–120Hz. In other words, even if the handheld struggles natively, you could still get a fluid experience.
Of course, none of this is official. Sony hasn't confirmed the PSP 3, its release date, screen specs, or PSSR 3.0. So take it all with a grain of salt—but it's hard not to get excited about the possibilities.
What do you think? Would a 120Hz OLED screen sell you on Sony's next handheld? Let us know in the comments!
