Ever been excited to join a brand-new community, only to watch it descend into chaos within hours? That's exactly what happened to SEGA's first official Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server.
On October 6, SEGA opened the server as a place for fans, SEGA staff, game developers, and moderators to hang out. Whether you're a lifelong Sonic veteran or just getting into the series, everyone was welcome. The rules were simple: keep things all-ages appropriate, protect personal info, be friendly and respectful, and no political or religious promotion. Major plot discussions needed spoiler tags too.
But according to screenshots and videos that leaked out, reality didn't match the peaceful vision. The chat was bombarded with inappropriate content and fan creations. Countless members actively advocated for trans rights, with some even claiming Sonic supports trans people. There was also trolling with "Sonichu," a bizarre Sonic and Pikachu mashup character. Moderators had no choice but to temporarily shut down conversations, and at the time of writing, messaging was still restricted for some members.
Beyond the usual community guidelines, SEGA added a unique rule: no AI-generated creative content. That means no AI art, text, music, or videos. They even specifically called out an "Eggman dating simulator." As SEGA put it, "A human-made Eggman dating simulator is (probably) fine, but why would you make that?" They also warned that rule-breakers could be kicked without prior warning.
Despite the rough start, the Sonic Discord is still up and running. SEGA has teased that staff and special guests will drop by from time to time, and they're hoping the community treats them well. "Let's give them a reason to come back next time!" the team said.
So, what do you think? Will you be joining the server, or are you staying far away from the chaos?
