Ever wonder how a simple idea turns into something massive? For World of Warcraft: Forever, it all started with a modest internal pitch: just four new dungeons. But as Blizzard got more excited, that number ballooned to six, then nine. Associate production director Clay Stone spilled the beans in a recent interview, and it's a fascinating look at how the game evolved.
Stone explained that Forever's journey began with humble roots, but the team's appetite for experimentation grew. "Our original pitch internally was: We'll do four new dungeons, and the next thing we know, we're doing six, and the next thing we know, we're doing nine," he said. That snowball effect wasn't just about dungeons—it reflected a broader shift in how Blizzard approached Classic content.
The turning point came with Season of Discovery, which launched in November 2023. The response blew the team away, and it sparked discussions about creating a permanent version of that experimental spirit. "That's really when the discussions began about, 'Hey, what does a version of this look like that is not pitched as a season to players?'" Stone recalled. From there, the scope of Forever expanded beyond anyone's initial expectations.
But it wasn't just about adding more content. Stone noted that the team's enthusiasm was infectious, and it spread throughout Blizzard. "That appetite amongst the team, and much broader in Blizzard, to be able to deliver something much more substantial than perhaps even what our players were expecting, that built and that grew," he said. The result? A launch that Stone believes has exceeded many players' expectations.
When the beta floodgates opened last month, players got their first taste of the expanded scope. According to Stone, the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. "There were players that perhaps expected us to announce something much smaller, but I believe, at least based on the response that we've seen, we've exceeded a lot of players' expectations in terms of the overall scope," he shared. It's a satisfying outcome for a team that poured so much into the project.
So what does this mean for you? If you're diving into the beta or planning to play at launch in November, you're getting a lot more than the original pitch promised. Nine new dungeons, plus all the other additions, are designed to slot seamlessly into the Classic world without disrupting that old-school feel. It's an impressive magic trick, and one that's sure to keep you busy for a long time.
With Forever, Blizzard seems to have found a winning formula: listen to players, follow the team's passion, and don't be afraid to dream bigger. The game launches in November, and if the beta is any indication, it's going to be a wild ride. What do you think about the expanded scope? Will you be jumping into WoW: Forever when it drops?
