Sony might be nudging everyone toward digital, but physical games aren't going down without a fight. A new 2026 PlayStation 5 physical games market report from data firm Alinea Analytics reveals that boxed copies are still pulling in serious cash—over $655 million in physical sales for new PS5 releases so far this year.
Leading the pack is Capcom's Resident Evil: Requiem. The horror title moved roughly 1.3 million physical copies on PlayStation, generating over $92.3 million. That physical haul alone accounted for 30.2% of the game's total revenue on Sony's platform. Even wilder: the PS5 physical version reportedly earned about 1.8 times more than the game's total revenue across all Xbox platforms combined.
Marvel's Wolverine snagged the number two spot. The game sold around 2.6 million copies total, with nearly 800,000 of those being physical—bringing in $64.6 million and making up 32.3% of its overall revenue. Capcom also scored big with Pragmata, which sold about 442,000 physical copies for $26.4 million, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which moved roughly 423,000 physical units for $30.2 million. Both titles saw physical editions account for a hefty 44% of their sales.
The analysts note that physical media still holds major sway for single-player, story-driven AAA games and titles with a strong Japanese market focus. Sports games, on the other hand, lean heavily on online modes and digital rewards—FC 27's physical revenue share was just 8.9%, and NBA 2K27 was even lower at 4.6%.
