Game of Thrones RTS Lets You Rewrite History—Even Let the White Walkers Win

Ever wished you could rewrite the ending of Game of Thrones? The upcoming real-time strategy game War for Westeros might just let you do that—and yes, that includes letting the White Walkers win.

During Gamescom Opening Night Live, developer Playside finally showed off gameplay for the highly anticipated title. First announced back in 2025 and originally slated for a 2026 release, War for Westeros lets you command legendary Houses like Lannister, Stark, and Targaryen, as well as the chilling forces of the Night King. Each faction is vying for control of the Seven Kingdoms, and it's up to you to lead your army to victory.

Hero units are a big deal here. Characters like Tywin Lannister and Jon Snow come with special abilities that can turn the tide of battle. And Daenerys? She's got a dragon, which honestly seems a bit overpowered—but who's complaining?

The new trailer gives us a taste of how you'll be able to alter Game of Thrones history. You can see Robb Stark cutting down Jaime Lannister before making his way to the Iron Throne—clearly someone warned him about the Red Wedding this time. But the most intriguing bit is the ending: the Night King sitting triumphantly on the Iron Throne, teasing what might have happened if the White Walkers had won.

Let's be real—the final season of Game of Thrones in 2019 is still remembered as one of the biggest letdowns in TV history. So the idea of being able to change events to your liking is pretty exciting. Not a fan of Bran the Broken being chosen as king? Now you can decide who sits on the Iron Throne, and hopefully craft a more satisfying conclusion than the one we got.

War for Westeros is designed as a nod to classic RTS games, featuring a single-player campaign and multiplayer modes for when you want to test your skills against players worldwide. It's part of a soft comeback for real-time strategy games, following hits like Age of Empires 4, Age of Mythology: Retold, and Homeworld 3. Upcoming titles like Stronghold 4 and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 show there's still a big appetite for old-school strategy.

As for the future of the Game of Thrones franchise, it's currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, but that could change if Paramount's reported $100 billion bid to acquire the company succeeds. For now, Game of Thrones remains a key pillar for Warner Bros., alongside Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, and DC Comics.

So, are you ready to rewrite history? Will you be picking this up when it launches? Let us know what you think!
