State of Decay 3 Closed Beta Announced for Late 2026 After Xbox Split

Remember when Microsoft suddenly broke up with a bunch of its studios, leaving everyone wondering what would happen to their favorite games? Well, State of Decay 3 is still kicking, and it's got a big surprise for you.

Undead Labs, the Washington-based dev behind the zombie survival series, just announced that State of Decay 3 will get a closed beta playtest before the end of 2026. That's right, you might get to sink your teeth into the next chapter of zombie mayhem sooner than you thought.

In an August 26 Xbox Wire post, community manager Bruce Dugan dropped the news. You can register for the beta right now, though an exact start date is still a mystery. Creative director Kevin Patzelt teased that the beta will open to "more players over time," so even if you don't get in immediately, there will be chances later.

Why the wait? Patzelt says this is "our largest map ever," and with untethered multiplayer, they need to stress-test and fine-tune the experience. It's all about making sure the game runs smoothly when you and your friends are exploring every corner of the undead-infested world.

This beta follows a closed alpha from May, which already gave players a taste of four-player co-op, new base-building and resource strategies, and plenty of combat. Now, the team is using feedback from that alpha to polish things up. Expect more engaging combat against freaks, improved lighting, weather, and visuals, plus cosmetic options like glasses and beards. Character movement is getting smoother and more reactive too.

All this comes just months after Microsoft's massive "reset," which saw several studios sold, layoffs, and cancellations. While some studios were left in the dust, Undead Labs managed to land on its feet with a new owner. The game was first announced in 2020, and while there's no firm release date yet, it's still planned for a 2027 launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
