Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger Shares His Top 4 Games

Ever been put on the spot and asked to name your top games of all time? It's a nightmare, right? Well, Resident Evil director Zach Cregger faced that exact challenge recently, and his picks are pure gamer gold.

In an interview with Regal Movies, Cregger didn't hesitate to share his top four: The Binding of Isaac, Dark Souls 3, Resident Evil 4, and The Last of Us Part II. "Off the top of my head: Binding of Isaac, Dark Souls 3, I would say Resident Evil 4, and, God, my last one? This is brutal. The Last of Us 2," he said. Talk about great taste!

It's no shocker that Resident Evil 4 made the cut, since Cregger has said his new movie draws heavy inspiration from that game. But here's a fun fact: all of his picks except The Last of Us Part II haven't been adapted into movies or TV shows yet. Could a Dark Souls film be in Cregger's future? We'll have to wait and see.

When it came to prepping his star, Austin Abrams, Cregger assigned some gaming homework: play Resident Evil 2, 4, and 7. The movie runs parallel to Resident Evil 2 and even hides a Resident Evil 4 Easter egg. Plus, in a Reddit AMA, Cregger mentioned he used "character elements" from the seventh game.

But not everyone is thrilled. Some fans are salty that the new movie doesn't adapt a specific game and introduces a new protagonist, leaving series mainstay Leon out. The film follows Abrams' medical courier, Bryan, who must deliver a package to Raccoon City General Hospital at the end of his shift—just as a zombie apocalypse breaks out.

Still, Cregger pulled details from across the franchise. "The visual language is taken from the games," he explained. "This movie lives in the third-person, kind of over-the-shoulder shot for most of its runtime, and it jumps to first person a lot. I feel like I have yet to see a movie that really leans into the video game visual vocabulary, the way this movie has."
