Ever wondered what it'd be like to build your own legendary Pokémon? Lego's latest Pokémon set, Rayquaza #72168, lets you do just that—and it might just be one of the best Pokémon builds yet.
The set stars the sky-high dragon from Pokémon Emerald, perched atop a recreation of the iconic Sky Pillar. The stand is a highlight: a translucent pillar wrapped in brick-built clouds, giving the whole scene a dynamic, ethereal feel. You also get a single minifigure—Draconic Loremaster Zinnia—who comes with a pair of Keystones, hinting at a possible mega-evolution that isn't actually included. Odd? A little. But as a scale reference, Zinnia does a great job selling Rayquaza's massive presence.
Speaking of the dragon itself, the build is surprisingly quick. Most of your 2-3 hours will go into the base—Rayquaza accounts for maybe a quarter of the process. That's not a bad thing: the stand is engaging to assemble, with crumbling ruins and wispy clouds that come together cleverly. The dragon, made from a series of tube-like segments, is fun but brief. You'll wish it lasted longer.
Once built, Rayquaza looks impressive. Its angular, ridged design suits Lego perfectly, and there are no stickers—thank goodness. Articulation is decent but limited: you can tweak the arms, mouth, and dorsal fins, but don't expect dynamic poses. Removing Rayquaza from the stand requires disassembly, and it tends to flop around afterward. This is a display piece first and foremost, not a toy for play.
At $129.99 / £119.99 for 1,038 pieces, the price is steep. The set is aimed at adults (18+), and while the build quality is high, it's hard to ignore the cost. If you're a die-hard Rayquaza fan or a Lego Pokémon collector, it might be worth it. Otherwise, you might want to wait for a sale.
