Ever wondered what it would look like if Nic Cage put on John Madden's face? Well, wonder no more, because the first full trailer for Madden just dropped, and it's... something. The David O. Russell-directed biopic stars Nicolas Cage as the legendary NFL coach and broadcaster, and based on these two minutes, we're not sure if it's a comedic masterpiece or a glorious disaster.
The trailer takes us through Madden's time as head coach of the Raiders before shifting to his broadcasting career. But the real star here is the makeup and prosthetics that turned Cage into the most famous NFL broadcaster of all time. Does he look like John Madden? Not really. He looks like Nic Cage wearing John Madden's face, which honestly makes us wonder if this is a secret Face/Off sequel.
Madden's name is basically synonymous with football video games today, and the trailer gives us a brief look at how that all began. John Mulaney appears as EA founder Trip Hawkins, and we see that Madden wasn't exactly thrilled with the original prototype because it didn't feature 11 players on a team. Classic Madden.
David O. Russell hasn't had the best track record lately—remember Amsterdam? That one lost a whole bunch of money. So maybe the morbid curiosity of seeing Nic Cage ham it up as John Madden will help this one out. But it's getting a Prime Video release on November 18 instead of a theatrical run, so make of that what you will.
The film also stars Christian Bale, Shane Gillis, Kathryn Hahn, and Marshawn Lynch in an Urkel outfit. Yes, you read that right. And how often Madden will mention Brett Favre remains unclear, but we're keeping our fingers crossed for at least one mention.
