Mass Effect 5 Trailer Leaks After BioWare Shutdown

A rumored Mass Effect 5 trailer, titled Mass Effect: Universe, has leaked online just hours after BioWare's shutdown under EA. The two-minute video is gameplay-free but has fans buzzing.

Mass Effect 5 Trailer Leaks After BioWare Shutdown

Did you hear the one about a Mass Effect 5 trailer leaking right after BioWare got shut down? Yeah, that's actually happening. A video purportedly titled Mass Effect: Universe has surfaced on the Mass Effect subreddit, posted by a fresh account calling itself a "new burner." It's just over two minutes long and completely gameplay-free, but it's already got the community talking.

The timing is wild. The trailer dropped just hours after an apparent EA employee claimed on October 21 that a trailer for Mass Effect 5 was ready. "There was a trailer ready for Mass Effect 5 that I saw a few months ago, so I'm puzzled as to how 'early' they were," the supposed employee wrote, referring to EA leadership's description of the game being in early production. They also noted that the Mass Effect group was about 50 devs, and that the Austin studio would remain open even as BioWare shuts down.

So when the trailer appeared in a reply to that post, the mystery user simply wrote, "Ask and you shall receive." The video is convincing enough that fans are already scanning it for generative AI markers, though it seems unlikely something of this quality could've been slapped together within 24 hours of the shutdown. If it's legitimate, expect a takedown notice soon—but that would only add fuel to the fire, and nothing ever truly leaves the internet.

Based on the trailer, Mass Effect 5 would've paired a recurring and visibly older Liara T'Soni with a new ex-military human hero in place of longtime protagonist Shepherd. A character of the same Turian race as fan-favorite Garrus Vakarian appears around the 1:31 mark. The scenario feels like an ambush operation, which some fans have interpreted as a dip into corporate espionage from BioWare. The least believable part? The end card says "Coming soon"—a phrase the games industry eternally misuses, especially given that EA and former BioWare employees suggested the next Mass Effect still needed plenty of time in the oven.

It's also worth noting that Mass Effect's annual day of celebration, N7 Day, was just a few weeks away. It's plausible BioWare could've trotted this trailer out on November 7, had EA not pulled the plug. But there's already enough wishful thinking going around. One fan wrote, "Man, I'm just so sad and angry." Another added, "I know one of you BioWare developers are probably lurking in this sub, just want to say this looks fucking awesome. I'm so sorry this happened. Keep fighting."

Mass Effect 5 was "something special," according to a dev—it was BioWare's response to what Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 devs "were bringing to the table." Whether this trailer is real or not, it's a bittersweet reminder of what could have been. What do you think—is this the real deal, or an elaborate fake? Will you be picking this up if it ever sees the light of day?
