Ever wondered what your PS5 Pro is really capable of when a studio actually pushes it? Final Fantasy VII Revelation is shaping up to be a pretty good answer.
The upcoming Final Fantasy VII title will use PSSR — PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution — to deliver "4K image quality and 60 FPS gameplay" on PS5 Pro. That's the headline, and for anyone who cares about how their games look and run, it's a big one.
If you're not deep in the tech weeds, PSSR is Sony's AI-driven upscaling tech built for the PS5 Pro. Instead of brute-forcing native 4K, it reconstructs a high-resolution image from lower internal rendering — which means studios can chase sharper visuals without sacrificing frame rate. Getting both 4K-quality output and 60 FPS in the same sentence is exactly the kind of combo players have been asking for.
And there's precedent here. The hope is that Revelation follows in the footsteps of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which delivered dramatic visual improvements over the base PS5 version when running on PS5 Pro. If Revelation clears that same bar, PS5 Pro owners could be in for a genuinely noticeable step up rather than a subtle patch job.
That matters because Rebirth's PS5 Pro showing set expectations high. Players saw what the hardware could do with a big-budget RPG, and now the question is whether Revelation can match or exceed it. The promise of 4K image quality paired with 60 FPS suggests Square Enix isn't aiming for a compromise between looks and smoothness — it's going for both.
Of course, we still need to see it in motion to judge how it actually lands. Specs on paper are one thing; a stable 60 FPS with clean image quality in real gameplay is another. But the stated target is a strong signal about where the team's priorities sit.
For PS5 Pro owners, this is the kind of detail that justifies the upgrade. For everyone else, it's a reminder that the gap between base and Pro versions of big RPGs keeps widening.
Will you be playing Revelation on PS5 Pro, or sticking with the base console? What do you think of the 4K/60 target?
