GTA 6 Preorders Heavily Favor PS5, Reportedly Sparking Xbox Concerns

GTA 6 preorders might be telling an uncomfortable story for Xbox, and Microsoft is apparently paying attention.

According to a report from Twisted Voxel, the upcoming open-world action-adventure game from Rockstar Games is seeing preorder numbers that lean heavily toward PS5 over Xbox Series X|S. That gap, according to The Verge's Tom Warren, is reportedly fueling internal concern at Microsoft about the state of its gaming platform and hardware business.

Citing Xbox insiders, Warren says the preorder split is "heavily skewed toward PS5." The disparity is reportedly big enough that it's being viewed internally as yet another alarm bell. In other words, it's not just a minor sales quirk, it's another warning sign for Microsoft's hardware strategy as the company looks ahead to GTA 6's launch.

The timing here matters. Xbox is in the middle of a turbulent stretch, with Microsoft continuing a major reorganization of its gaming division. The console maker recently announced it would cut 268 positions in its gaming department while reshuffling its studios and franchises.

Those changes come on the heels of multiple rounds of layoffs and studio closures that have already significantly reshaped Xbox's first-party organization. So when a blockbuster like GTA 6 shows preorders tilting hard toward PlayStation, it's easy to see why that would raise eyebrows inside the company.

Of course, it's worth keeping in mind that this is based on reported insider information, not official numbers from Microsoft, Sony, or Rockstar. Neither company has confirmed any preorder data, and GTA 6 itself still doesn't have a confirmed release date. But if the reported split is accurate, it could add more pressure on Xbox as it tries to make its case to players ahead of one of the biggest launches in gaming history.

For now, all eyes remain on Rockstar and how the GTA 6 rollout unfolds. If preorders really are this lopsided, it could shape the conversation around console choice for a long time to come.
