Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Movie in the Works at Paramount

Did you ever think you'd see Night City on the big screen? Well, it's happening. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie, according to Deadline. That's right—the dystopian world of chrome, cyberware, and corporate greed is getting the Hollywood treatment.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. You might know him from the Transformers and G.I. Joe films, so he's no stranger to big-budget action. CD Projekt Red is also onboard to produce, which is a good sign that the game's creators will have a say in how their universe is portrayed. But before you start fancasting, temper your excitement: there's no word yet on actors, writers, or directors attached to the project.

So what will the movie actually be about? That's the million-eddie question. It's unclear if it will faithfully adapt the 2020 video game or tell a new story set in the Cyberpunk universe, similar to what Netflix did with the animated Edgerunners series. Both approaches have potential, but they'd lead to very different films.

If it is a straight adaptation, Paramount already has some built-in starpower. Keanu Reeves played Johnny Silverhand in the game—a radical, Tyler Durden-style character who lives in the protagonist's head. Idris Elba also joined the cast in the Phantom Liberty expansion, which feels like a really cool storyline to adapt, though it might not work as a mainstream entry point into that universe. Either way, it's exciting to hear that Night City is making its way to the big screen.

CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski shared his excitement on X. "We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise," he said. "We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time." So it sounds like things are still early, but the partnership is off to a positive start.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is hard at work on the next Cyberpunk game, which is expected to release after The Witcher 4. As a result, we may not see the next game until 2029 or 2030 at the absolute earliest. But that may also be perfect timing, as a Cyberpunk film may not be ready until around that time either. Reeves has already expressed interest in appearing in the next Cyberpunk game, so maybe he'd play Johnny Silverhand on the big screen too.

Paramount is leaning heavy into major video game adaptations. It has Street Fighter releasing next weekend, and in 2028, the studio will release a Call of Duty movie written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by Peter Berg. Paramount is making all kinds of big moves, as it just merged with Warner Brothers, meaning it has a wealth of new IP to take advantage of. With Cyberpunk 2077 joining the lineup, it's clear Paramount wants a piece of the gaming pie.

What do you think? Are you ready for a live-action Cyberpunk movie, or should Night City stay in the game? Let us know in the comments!
