Sea of Thieves Fans Worry as Rare Moves Under Activision in Xbox Shake-Up

What happens when the studio behind your favorite pirate adventure gets shuffled under a new corporate flag? That's the question Sea of Thieves fans are asking right now. Rare, the beloved UK developer, has been consolidated under Activision as part of Xbox's latest reset. And the community is, understandably, a little nervous.

For those who haven't been following the corporate chessboard, here's the short version: Xbox has been going through what's being called a "reset," and as part of that, Rare now finds itself reporting up through Activision. Yes, that Activision. The same publisher known for Call of Duty and a very different style of game development.

If you're a Sea of Thieves player, you know Rare isn't just any studio. They're the ones who brought us Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, and Viva Piñata before turning Sea of Thieves into a live-service success story that's still sailing strong. The idea of them being folded into Activision's structure has raised eyebrows across the community.

Why the worry? Well, Activision isn't exactly known for nurturing quirky, long-term creative projects. It's a company built on annualized blockbusters. So when fans hear "Rare is now under Activision," they start picturing layoffs, resource shifts, or worse—a change in the very DNA that makes Rare, well, Rare.
