You've heard of unlikely couples, but Sun Wukong and Lin Daiyu? That's the AI-generated romance taking Chinese social media by storm—and even the original Monkey King has thoughts.
Fans have been using AI to splice together the 1986 TV adaptation of Journey to the West's Sun Wukong with the 1987 Dream of the Red Chamber's Lin Daiyu, creating short videos of the two in a romantic relationship. The so-called "Sheng-Dai" ship has exploded online, with netizens noting that despite coming from two completely different classics of Chinese literature, the pairing somehow doesn't feel jarring at all.
According to fans, both characters share a mischievous, quick-witted, and kind-hearted streak. They speak their minds and don't crumble under pressure. And let's be real—both their original stories end on a bittersweet note, leaving generations of readers wishing things had gone differently.
Yesterday, Liu Xiao Ling Tong—the actor who brought the 1986 Sun Wukong to life—appeared in Jinan, Shandong, where he was asked about the viral fan creations. He revealed he'd read a newspaper piece stating that Sheng-Dai content has racked up 5 billion views.
He found the concept genuinely clever. Dream of the Red Chamber is also known as The Story of the Stone, he pointed out, while Sun Wukong was literally born from a stone—the Monkey King, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. That connection, he said, makes the creative idea both meaningful and fun. He believes such comparative mashups can draw new generations into traditional culture and spark innovation across art forms.
But he also struck a cautious note, referencing a People's Daily article he found insightful. If some creations cross into territory that violates national policies or regulations—or steps over the line in viewers' hearts—that's when everyone needs to be on alert, he said. Proper guidance and sorting are essential.
It's a fair point. Just days earlier, on October 8, Kuaishou published its twelfth notice on cracking down on "AI-mutated" videos. The platform specifically flagged inappropriate romantic links between characters from classic works like Journey to the West and Dream of the Red Chamber, as well as crossover interactions with popular game characters, and confirmed it had taken down violating content.
So where do you stand—is the Sheng-Dai ship a harmless creative spark or a step too far? Drop your thoughts below.
