Subnautica 2's Next Big Update Adds Its Scariest Region Yet

Ready to dive back into the deep, or maybe just hide under your desk? Subnautica 2 is gearing up for what Unknown Worlds is calling its "most substantial update" since the game hit early access last May — and it sounds like it's bringing nightmares along for the ride.

In the first entry of a new vlog series, creative director Anthony Gallegos laid out the plan for "early access 2.0," or EA 2 as the team calls it. The headline addition is a complete new playable region packed with several new biomes. That's not just a fresh place to swim around — it's a whole new chunk of the map to explore, built from the ground up.

But the update isn't just about geography. Gallegos says EA 2 will also add "a lot of new story elements," expanding on the tales of the good ship Cicada's colonists and the game's mysterious "other beings." So if you've been hooked on the lore, expect more threads to pull on. There are also new creatures to meet — and, in classic Subnautica fashion, to not kill.

Now for the part that'll keep you up at night: Gallegos promises this new region is "one of our scariest regions we've ever done." It's dark, it's threatening, and apparently it's really beautiful at the same time. That combination of gorgeous and terrifying is basically Subnautica's whole brand, so it sounds like the team is leaning all the way in.

If the Collector Leviathan already gives you chills, brace yourself — Unknown Worlds is updating its behaviour to make it "scarier than ever," though the studio is staying tight-lipped on exactly how. Beyond the scares, you're getting some new gadgets to tinker with, new biomods, and a change to how dash works.

Speaking of dash, this one's a quality-of-life win: it's moving right onto your fins instead of being a biomod. As Gallegos puts it, you no longer have to think about which active biomod to take instead of dash — you just take dash. There's also a new chassis for the Tadpole called the frog chassis, which finally gives you the benefit of arms and legs.

So whether you're here for the story, the creatures, or the sheer terror of a dark new biome, EA 2 is shaping up to be a big moment for Subnautica 2. What do you think — are you diving into the scary new region on day one, or waiting to see what's lurking in the dark first?
