Ever dreamed of taking The Last of Us Part 2's brutal combat online against other players? Well, that dream just got shelved. A fan-made PvP multiplayer mod for the PC version of the game is officially not happening, after its creator says Sony stepped in and asked them to pull the plug.
According to the mod maker, Sony Interactive Entertainment reached out directly and requested that the project not be released to the public. That's it. No public release, no download, no lobbies full of Ellie versus Abby showdowns. The mod, which would have brought player-versus-player action to Naughty Dog's grim post-apocalyptic sequel, is now cancelled.
If you've been following The Last of Us Part 2's rocky road on PC, this probably stings a little extra. The game's official multiplayer ambitions were famously scrapped when Naughty Dog's standalone Factions project was shelved, leaving fans hungry for any kind of competitive TLOU experience. For a while, this mod looked like it might fill that void, at least unofficially.
But Sony's request isn't exactly shocking. The company has a well-documented history of protecting its biggest franchises, and a public PvP mod for one of its flagship PlayStation titles was always going to be walking a tightrope. Mods that add cosmetics or quality-of-life tweaks often fly under the radar, but full multiplayer modes? That's a different beast entirely, and it tends to attract legal attention fast.
The disappointing part for fans is that this wasn't some half-baked experiment. It was a project people were genuinely excited about, and its cancellation closes off one of the few remaining avenues for competitive The Last of Us action. With no official multiplayer on the horizon, the community's options just got a lot thinner.
It's also a reminder of the strange gray area PC modding lives in. Creators pour months into passion projects, only to see them vanish after a single message from a publisher. Whether you think Sony is being overly protective or simply safeguarding its IP, the outcome is the same: players lose out.
For now, The Last of Us Part 2 remains a strictly single-player affair on PC, and this mod won't be changing that. If you were holding out hope for fan-made PvP, it might be time to let that one go.
What do you think, though? Is Sony right to shut this down, or should fan projects like this get a little more breathing room? Let us know in the comments.
