A new playtest listing for a PS5 and PC shooter called Project Espresso looks a lot like Sony's long-quiet Fairgame$, and Polygon wants answers.

Is Fairgame$ Back? Mysterious 'Project Espresso' Test Sparks Revival Rumors

Remember Fairgame$? Sony's flashy heist shooter that seemed to vanish into thin air? Well, it might be sneaking back onto the radar.

A new playtest listing has popped up on Player.gg for something called Project Espresso, described as an "unannounced competitive action shooter" heading to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. If that description sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Here's the pitch from the listing: Project Espresso is a third-person PvPvE competitive action game where squads race to infiltrate heavily guarded locations, swipe valuable cargo, and extract before rival teams beat them to it. Sound like a certain heist game you've been waiting on? Yeah, us too.

Polygon spotted the listing and noted the striking similarities to Fairgame$, the multiplayer shooter in development at Haven Studios under the PlayStation umbrella. Fairgame$ was first revealed back in 2023, showing off a cast that included a Black lead character, and it's built around that same search, fight, extract loop. It's slated for PC and PS5, though a release date has never been nailed down.

Back in 2023, PlayStation's own blog described Fairgame$ as "an exciting competitive heist game where you'll join an underground movement to rob the ultra-rich and rebalance the scales of wealth." Project Espresso's steal-and-extract premise lines up almost too neatly with that.

According to Insider Gaming, internal materials have pointed to Fairgame$ leaning hard into the extraction shooter formula. The game has been pretty quiet since its initial reveal, which makes any sign of life worth watching.

Polygon has reached out to Sony Interactive Entertainment to find out whether Project Espresso is actually Fairgame$ in disguise. No official word yet, so treat this one as a rumor for now.

Still, between the genre, the platform lineup, and the timing, it's hard not to connect the dots. If Project Espresso really is Fairgame$, it could mean Sony's heist shooter is finally gearing up for another look.

What do you think? Is Project Espresso secretly Fairgame$ making its comeback, or just a coincidence? Let us know in the comments.
