What if you could play GTA 6 on your PC the day it launches, no console required? That's the tantalizing possibility behind a new report that Xbox has locked up exclusive cloud streaming rights to Rockstar's long-awaited blockbuster.
According to The Verge, Xbox will be the only place to stream GTA 6 via the cloud when it launches. The best part? You won't need an Xbox console to do it. Xbox's cloud streaming service works across a bunch of devices, including PCs, smart TVs, and mobile phones, so the barrier to entry could be surprisingly low.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told employees at a recent town hall that the company was planning something related to GTA 6 that "no other platform holder is doing." That's a bold claim, and if this deal is real, it's easy to see what she meant.
The arrangement is said to begin with the game's November release, though it's unclear how long the exclusivity will last. For PC players, this could be a serviceable workaround if you don't want to wait for Rockstar to release a native port. Just temper your expectations: streaming won't give you the performance options, modding, or other perks of a true PC version.
There's a timing wrinkle that makes this even more interesting. Microsoft has been shaking up how many hours Game Pass subscribers can stream their games, and The Verge notes that pay-as-you-go plans are set to arrive in November. In theory, that means you could pay for timed access to GTA 6 via streaming even if you don't own a console at all.
This all lands against a backdrop of console competition. PlayStation already secured GTA 6 marketing rights, complete with limited-edition DualSense controllers. Rockstar has said footage was captured in real time on PS5 hardware, and the PS5 version will boast unique features, with branding claiming the game will "play best" on PS5. The Verge also recently reported that Xbox was worried about GTA 6 pre-order numbers on its platform, though Xbox CSO Matthew Ball denied those claims, saying the game was breaking records and matched the platform's share of the console market.
So Xbox's streaming play looks like a direct counterpunch to PlayStation around the biggest game of the year. Consoles are still brutally hard to find and expensive when you do, so giving players a cloud-based way in could be a massive win, provided Xbox gets the word out to casual gamers.
IGN has reached out to Rockstar Games and Xbox for comment, so nothing is official yet. Will you be trying GTA 6 through the cloud, or are you holding out for a proper PC port?
