Valve Dev Drops 'HLX' Mention at Audio Talk, Coworker Quips 'Nice Work'

Ever get the feeling Valve is just trolling Half-Life fans at this point? During a recent GameSoundCon panel on Valve's audio engine, veteran composer Mike Morasky was answering a question about voice count when he casually dropped the name 'HLX' – the long-rumored Half-Life project. And a coworker's reaction was absolutely priceless.

Morasky, whose credits include Team Fortress 2, Portal, and Half-Life: Alyx, was joined by sound designers David Feise (a 17-year Valve veteran) and Carlye Nyte. While discussing how Valve's group system folds into its HDR audio setup, Morasky said, 'In fact, I think Deadlock has their own version of HDR. HLX has its own version. So on and so forth.' Almost immediately after, Feise could be heard whispering what sure sounded like 'nice work' before jumping in to say, 'Groups is its own one-hour talk, so come talk to us about that afterwards.'

It's a tiny moment, but for Half-Life sleuths, it's a big deal. HLX has been rumored for years, and Valve has referenced it in passing before, but this might be the loudest and clearest nod yet. Morasky himself has hinted at its existence more than once – in a 2023 interview, he mentioned 'both the Half-Life games' he's worked on before quickly correcting himself to 'well, game.' Given that he's only officially worked on Half-Life: Alyx, that slip raised plenty of eyebrows.

Of course, Morasky stopped short of promising an imminent new Half-Life game, and Valve remains as tight-lipped as ever. But when you've been waiting for a sequel for this long, any mention of HLX is enough to set tongues wagging. The jar of hopes is so overstuffed that it's hard not to read a little into this – even if it's just a casual name-drop during a technical talk.

For now, all we can do is speculate and keep our fingers crossed. Will HLX ever see the light of day? Will Valve finally break the silence? Only time will tell. But hey, if people keep predicting an announcement every year, surely it will come true eventually, right?
