Sony just dropped a price bomb, and the internet is still feeling the shockwaves. God of War: Laufey has been listed at HK$388 in the Hong Kong store, a huge step down from the HK$568 that Sony's first-party games usually ask for. Naturally, players had plenty to say.
It didn't take long for the conversation to shift from Sony's own pricing to the third-party publishers sitting on the other side of the fence. Fans quickly zeroed in on Square Enix as the prime example, arguing that Sony undercutting its own premium price puts real pressure on everyone else's pricing strategy.
One player didn't hold back: "This price cut is a straight slap in the face to certain third parties. Yeah, I'm talking about you, Square Enix. Bloated and endless, I pre-ordered the first two, and the third one doesn't even get a discount — it's almost double the Steam price." They added that anyone claiming first-party cuts can't influence third parties should just wait and see, and name-dropped Kim Hyung-tae for good measure.
Others chimed in with their own frustrations. "As a self-respecting JRPG fan, I've been pinching my nose and throwing money at Square Enix for years," one comment read. "If I hadn't already built the habit of gaming on console, I'd have jumped to PC long ago." Another simply said they no longer want to buy the third part of Final Fantasy VII.
Some took a more strategic view of the timing. Since the game doesn't launch until February next year, opening pre-orders early at this price could be a way to nudge every game releasing that month toward a lower price point — giving them a soft landing before the cuts become unavoidable. A blunter take summed it up: "Sales will teach them a lesson soon enough."
Either way, Sony's move isn't just about convincing you to buy God of War: Laufey. It's being read as a deliberate jab at the third-party pricing system, and whether other publishers follow suit is something only the market can answer.
So what do you think — is Sony setting a new standard, or is this just a one-off play? Let us know in the comments.
