Palworld Devs: New Pals Must Be Memorable, Not Just Numbers

Pocketpair's John Buckley says the team avoids rushing to add '100 new Pals' and instead focuses on making each Pal memorable, while keeping balance in check.

Palworld Devs: New Pals Must Be Memorable, Not Just Numbers

Ever wonder why Palworld doesn't just flood its roster with hundreds of new Pals every update? According to Pocketpair's head of publishing and communications, John "Bucky" Buckley, the studio has a clear philosophy: quality over quantity. In a recent interview with MP1st, Buckley explained that the team doesn't view new Pals as just another number to add to the list. "Rather than saying, 'We need to release 100 new Pals with the next update,' we try to add Pals in a meaningful way," he said.

That means each new Pal needs to have something special that makes players remember it. "Ideally, every Pal should have something that gives players a reason to remember it," Buckley noted, "whether that is its design, abilities, work suitability, combat role, personality, or sometimes just something strange or funny about it." So don't expect filler creatures—Pocketpair wants every addition to leave an impression.

Of course, adding more Pals isn't just about creativity; it also affects game balance. Each new Pal brings new abilities, which can shake up the meta. Buckley acknowledged this: "Of course, balance becomes more complicated as the roster grows, so we continue to look at player data and feedback every time we release new Pals." That means the team keeps a close eye on how players are using the new Pals and adjusts as needed.

And they've had plenty of practice. The 1.0 update added 72 new Pals over the summer, and true to their word, balance patches followed. An update in early September brought various Pal adjustments, battle changes, item tweaks, and more. It's clear that Pocketpair doesn't just dump new Pals and walk away—they're committed to maintaining a healthy game environment.

So what does this mean for players? It means you can expect future updates to introduce Pals that are thoughtfully designed and integrated, rather than just padding out the roster. It also means the devs are listening to your feedback and using data to fine-tune the experience. While some fans might be hoping for specific themes (like pastel pink fairy Pals—yes, we're with you), the focus remains on meaningful additions.

With this approach, Pocketpair is betting that a smaller, more memorable roster will keep players engaged longer than a bloated one. And given Palworld's continued popularity, it seems to be working. What do you think? Are you happy with fewer but more memorable Pals, or would you rather see a massive roster expansion? Let us know in the comments!
