Wolverine Claws Its Way to PS5 Top Seller Despite Mixed Reviews

Did you pick up Marvel's Wolverine last month? If so, you're far from alone. Despite a decidedly mixed critical reception, Insomniac's mutant adventure clawed its way to the top of the PlayStation 5 digital sales charts in September.

Sony just dropped its list of top-selling digital games across the US, Canada, and Europe for the month, and Wolverine is sitting pretty in first place for the US and Canada. That's a serious flex when you consider what it beat out: FC 27 and NBA 2K27, two sports juggernauts with absolutely massive install bases. Never count Logan out, right?

Rounding out the top five in North America, you've got Halloween: The Game in fourth and The Blood of Dawnwalker, the new historical horror RPG from Rebel Wolves, in fifth. Not a bad lineup for spooky season.

Over in Europe, things look a little different. Wolverine had to settle for second place behind FC 27, which makes sense when you remember just how rabid football fans are across the pond. With the Premiership, Bundesliga, LaLiga, and every other major league driving that fanbase, it's tough for anything to top a big football release over there. The Blood of Dawnwalker and Halloween took the next two spots, while GTA 5 claimed fifth. That game has been unstoppable since 2013, and honestly, I'm not sure even GTA 6 will slow it down much. The newer game may be bigger and better, but GTA 5 will be cheaper, which makes it awfully appealing to anyone who hasn't jumped in yet.

So what's the takeaway here? Whatever you think of Marvel's Wolverine, the game clearly did solid business for everyone involved. Mixed reviews didn't stop players from giving it a shot, and that's a testament to the pull of the character and Insomniac's track record after three Spider-Man games.

It's also a good reminder that critical buzz and commercial success don't always line up. Sometimes people just want to play as the best there is at what they do, even if the game occasionally plays itself.

Will you be picking up Marvel's Wolverine, or are you waiting for a sale? What do you think about it topping the charts despite the mixed reviews?
