Fable Creator Peter Molyneux: From Worried to Can't Wait for Reboot

Ever wondered how the original creator of Fable feels about the upcoming reboot? Peter Molyneux, the mastermind behind the beloved RPG series, has some thoughts—and they've evolved over time.

In a recent interview with PCGamesN, Molyneux admitted he was "a little bit worried" when he first saw the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase trailer for Playground Games' Fable reboot. Starring British comedian Richard Ayoade, the trailer felt "a little too fairytale-ish" for his taste. But since then, he's been "very encouraged" by the latest gameplay footage. "They're keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special," he says.

Molyneux, who founded Lionhead Studios and now leads 22Cans, isn't involved in the new game. That separation means he'll experience it purely as a player. "In one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I've really played as a gamer," he notes. "And that's going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can't wait."

He's also immensely proud that the series he loved is continuing. "It makes me immensely proud that a game that I loved to be involved with is continuing," he says. "I really have loved watching how their game has evolved."

Still, he has one lingering curiosity: the alignment system. "Still curious about the alignment system, and how that visually affects the world," he says. "But I'm going to be first in the line to play it; I can assure you of that."

Molyneux has previously gotten emotional about the reboot, saying he felt himself tearing up because "this thing that we created, it's going to live, it's going to carry on." At the time, he noted a "slight antiseptic feel" but trusted the devs to add character and "dirtiness" to the world. Now, he's much more satisfied.

With Fable set to release next year, fans are eager to see how Playground Games handles the legacy. And if Molyneux is excited, that's a good sign. What do you think—will you be picking up the new Fable?
