Armed Fantasia Cancelled: Sony Rejection and $2.5M Kickstarter Gone?

Well, this one hurts. Armed Fantasia: To the End of the Wilderness, the JRPG that so many of you helped fund on Kickstarter, has been officially cancelled.

The news comes straight from publisher 505 Games and its parent company Digital Bros, which confirmed the cancellation in its latest financial report. The report states that the group decided to stop development on several games, including Directorate: Novitiate, Armed Fantasia, and a sequel to the free-to-play title Battle Island, after multiple attempts to rework their gameplay. Translation: things just weren't coming together.

If you remember the hype, you're not alone. Armed Fantasia was revealed four years ago on Kickstarter as a spiritual successor to the classic JRPG series Wild Arms, led by key creators from the original games. It was a dream project for fans of old-school RPGs.

The campaign was a joint effort with another RPG, Penny Blood. Together, they blew past their initial $750,000 goal in a single day and eventually raised around $2.5 million. 505 Games stepped in to publish, and everything looked promising. But the project never managed to make the necessary progress.

Back in a 2022 interview, the original Wild Arms designer revealed that Armed Fantasia had been pitched to Sony multiple times, but Sony simply wasn't interested in publishing it. That rejection was a tough blow, and now it seems the project has reached its end.

As of right now, there's been no update on the Kickstarter page. Backers are still in the dark, left wondering what happens next with their pledges. It's a frustrating situation for everyone who believed in the game.
