Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Free on Switch Until Sept 30

Have you been curious about Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown but never pulled the trigger? Well, if you're a Nintendo Switch Online member, you can now play the entire game for free until September 30.

That's right — the whole thing. Ubisoft Montpellier's 2D Metroidvania-style Prince of Persia game is available as a free playable demo starting today, September 24 at 10 AM PT, through Wednesday, September 30 at 11:59 PM PT. The catch? You need to be a Nintendo Switch Online member to take advantage of this offer. But if you are, you're in for a treat.

And there's more: during this trial period, you can earn 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points by completing a mission in the game. To find out how, just check the Missions & Rewards section on the Nintendo Switch Online portal or from your Switch's home screen. Plus, like many modern demos, your save data will carry over if you decide to buy the full game. So there's no reason not to give it a shot.

If you haven't played it yet, it's definitely worth a try. We at IGN scored the game a glowing 8 out of 10, praising it for capturing "not only what made games such as The Sands of Time so good," but also ironing out "the little issues that plagued the 3D games in this series by opting for a 2D perspective." It's a refreshing take on the iconic series, and one that's well worth a shot.

But despite receiving critical acclaim, Ubisoft disbanded the team behind the game after it failed to meet sales expectations, and plans for a sequel were reportedly scrapped in favor of putting its developers on other projects (like Beyond Good and Evil 2, which is still in development and recently added a writer from Assassin's Creed Shadows to its ranks). Since then, the game has received a few new modes, updates, story DLC, and even a mobile port, though the possibility of a sequel remains grim.

There's hope that renewed interest in the title, thanks to free demos like this one and multiple big sales over the years, could sway Ubisoft's opinion… but it's not looking likely. At least fans have The Rogue Prince of Persia, which received a fair few updates this year like new elements, tools, weapons affixes, and other quality-of-life improvements; though the highly-anticipated Sands of Time remake has unfortunately been canned.
