Remember the good old days in GTA when you'd just walk up to any car, press Triangle, and zoom off? Well, GTA 6 is shaking things up big time. Car theft is getting a complete overhaul, and it's about to become a lot more realistic—and a lot more challenging. Here's the lowdown on what we know so far.
First up, stealing a parked car is no longer a simple button press. In the GTA 6 gameplay trailer, we saw Jason approach a car and get multiple options. One of those is using a slim jim—a classic tool for popping locks on older vehicles. But here's the catch: the slim jim won't work on every car. Newer, fancier rides might have electronic locks that are immune to that old-school trick. So, you'll need to think about what car you're targeting.
And it gets even trickier. Many cars are fitted with tracking devices, meaning the cops can track your location after you steal one. That's a huge change from before, where you could easily lose the heat if no one saw you. Now, if you want to get away clean, you'll need a special item to disable the tracker. But you won't start the game with these tools—you'll have to progress through the story or complete side missions to unlock them. That adds a whole new layer of planning to your criminal activities.
But wait, there's a silver lining: apparently, if you drive fast enough, the cops can't track you. So, you might be able to outrun the tracker, but if you slow down even for a second, they'll know exactly where you are. That's a tense balancing act between speed and stealth.
Now, what about stealing a car that's occupied? If the driver's door is unlocked, you can just open it and initiate a quick-time event to yank them out. But if there's a passenger, they'll fight back too. And even after you get the car, the tracker is still an issue, so you'll need to deal with that pronto.
How do you know what kind of security a car has? There's an app called Waink that lets you scan vehicles and see their security systems and even how much it'll cost to register the car as your own. That's right—you can actually own the cars you steal, but it'll cost you.
Here's another twist: if you ditch your own registered car while the cops are after you, they'll set up a perimeter around it. If you come back, they'll be waiting. And if you wait too long, they'll impound it. So, you might have to sneak into the impound lot to get it back or pay a fee to retrieve it. That's some serious consequence for your actions.
All these changes mean you can't just grab the nearest car for a quick getaway anymore. You'll need to plan your robberies more carefully. Maybe one character will be the lookout with a vehicle ready, or you'll stash a getaway car beforehand. The days of impulsive car theft are over.
GTA 6 is clearly pushing for a more immersive and strategic experience. What do you think of these changes? Are you excited about the added depth, or do you miss the simple thrill of stealing any car on a whim? Let us know!
