Diablo 4's Nostalgic Season Makes Me Want a Diablo 1 Remake, Not Diablo 5

Did you catch Diablo 4's new season, Season of Hell's Legacy? It's a full-on nostalgia trip for longtime fans. And after playing it, I'm convinced: we need a Diablo 1 remake way more than we need Diablo 5 right now.

The season, Diablo 4's 15th, is packed with returning faces. Diablo himself is a major highlight, alongside Mephisto, Baal, and even Deckard Cain as your guide. But the real star is the Waking Nightmares – seasonal dungeons that recreate iconic moments from the series' history. My favorite? An almost complete recreation of Diablo 1's main mission, from Tristram Cathedral down to the catacombs, caves, and Hell itself.

Then I found out you can return to a fully recreated Old Tristram, complete with the same landmarks and NPCs featuring original voice lines from the first Diablo. I had to explore my old stomping grounds. Tristram – that music, those characters – it's like my virtual home. Diablo was the first game I ever became obsessed with as a kid. I'd spend hours chatting with strangers there, unknowingly forming friendships that would last decades. Going back was intense.

But it also made me want a full-blown Diablo remake. We've got three long years until Diablo 5, assuming no delays. Diablo 4 is great, especially this season, but three years is a long time. We need something to do in the meantime. A proper remake of Diablo – not just a remaster like Diablo 2: Resurrected – would give ARPG fans more demons to click to death while they wait. It would also give newer fans, who might've started with Diablo 4 or 3 or even 2, a reason to experience the very beginning of the saga.

Diablo 1 is also just a sick game with a great story and a ridiculously vibey world. Everyone should experience it at least once. But with 1996 visuals, I get why someone under 30 might bristle at a full playthrough. I'd accept a touched-up remaster, but a ground-up remake would be a much stronger draw for newcomers.

Blizzard missed a big opportunity to announce something like this during the series' 30th anniversary celebrations at BlizzCon 2026 – I suppose they were a little preoccupied with Diablo 5's surprise announcement. But it's not too late! Getting it into players' hands before Diablo 5 would be ideal. Even outside that context, a Diablo remake just makes sense. It's a super old, equally beloved game that hasn't been updated meaningfully in 30 years. Diablo 4's bite-sized recreations are nostalgic treats, but they're mere teases of what's possible in a proper remake.
